The former Jänschwalde open-cast mine exemplifies the profound structural transformation taking place in the Lusatia region. Following the cessation of lignite mining, the areas around Cottbus are being gradually reclaimed and transformed into a safe post-mining landscape suitable for both ecological and economic use. In May 2026, we had the rare opportunity to visit the mining site in person and view current and future reclamation projects alongside the commissioning clients and executing contractors.

The measures involved include dismantling mining infrastructure, stabilizing slopes, creating new aquatic landscapes, and reforesting and greening vast areas. More than 3,000 hectares have already been reclaimed at the Jänschwalde site alone, with work expected to continue into the 2030s.

This reclamation effort ranks among Germany’s largest landscape transformation projects. Rehabilitating former lignite mining regions requires investments running into the billions. In the context of the coal phase-out, discussions are underway regarding approximately €1.75 billion in funding—specifically for the company LEAG—to secure reclamation obligations. At the same time, ensuring the region's sustainable development requires significant personnel, technical, and planning resources over many years.
